Mental Model for Improving Relationships

One of the most underrated tools in a cybersecurity leader’s arsenal?

Relationships.

You can’t possibly know every technology. You won’t catch every detail. And you certainly can’t untangle every historical decision made in a modern enterprise.

But you can lead through trust and understanding.

The most effective leaders I’ve seen are the ones who enroll others in the vision, then shut up, listen and focus on removing roadblocks.

When I asked stakeholders for their ideas - armed only with a clear goal and an open mind - I was consistently amazed. Their ideas were better than mine. Their plans were more aligned with the real-world challenges on the ground.

My role became simple: listen, enable, and strengthen relationships across the org.

When you lead that way, problems that lingered for years suddenly start to dissolve.

So here’s my question for you:

What’s one relationship you’ve strengthened this year that had an outsized impact on your work? Drop it below. Let’s learn from each other.
